WatchThumb-Sucking & Oral Habits

How long is too long for thumb-sucking or a pacifier?

At what point does a thumb, finger, or pacifier habit stop being harmless? It's one of the most common questions parents bring to Dr. Najjar at NuLine Orthodontics. In early childhood the sucking is comforting and completely normal. What changes the answer is duration: a habit that carries on long enough puts steady pressure on a jaw and teeth that are still forming, and orthodontic treatment may later have to correct the result.

The video breaks down what that pressure actually does. Sustained sucking can flare the front teeth outward, narrow the upper palate, and leave an open bite, where the top and bottom teeth don't meet. A crossbite is the other common result, with the top teeth biting inside the bottom teeth. Neither one is purely cosmetic, since both change how the bite works, and neither usually corrects itself.

Acting early pays off here. A palatal expander is a simple appliance that gently widens the upper palate and gives teeth the room to erupt properly, and it's one of the interceptive tools Dr. Najjar uses in early orthodontics. It does depend on the growth plate in the roof of the mouth still being flexible. Since that plate typically fuses around age 14–16, treatment works best when it starts well before then.

Two things are worth an orthodontic evaluation: a habit still going past age 4 or 5, and any change you've noticed in your child's bite. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first check-up by age 7, and as orthodontic specialists, Dr. Najjar and the team at NuLine Orthodontics can tell you whether a habit appliance or other early treatment would help, and exactly when to start.
