WatchLower Lingual Holding Arch

How a lower lingual holding arch protects the lower arch

A child can lose several lower baby teeth ahead of schedule, whether to decay, an injury, or simply out of sequence. The teeth beside each gap then tend to drift inward, and the arch gives up room the permanent teeth underneath were counting on. A lower lingual holding arch is a slim custom appliance that sits behind the lower teeth and keeps that room until those permanent teeth are ready.

A bond to a back molar on each side anchors it, and the wire follows the inside curve of the lower arch, which the video makes easy to see. The first few days take some getting used to, and after that most kids stop noticing it. From there it simply stays put, sometimes for years, until the permanent teeth come in.

Worth being clear about what it doesn't do: unlike braces, it moves nothing. It holds the teeth already there exactly where they are, so the developing permanent teeth have a clear path up. That places it squarely in early orthodontics, the interceptive work Dr. Najjar takes on while a bite is still forming.

Has your child already lost lower baby teeth early, or does it look likely? Bring it up with Dr. Najjar at NuLine Orthodontics, and we can look at whether a holding arch, or another space maintainer, is the right call. Guiding the space now is far easier, and far less expensive, than undoing the drift later with braces.
